Last W & W COOKOUT - Sept 26

Well our season is rapidly coming to an end.  It really seems like only yesterday we were starting.  But the cool weather and cool colors are welcomed.  Remember that our annual 50/50 sponsored Cookout on the Porch is after Monday's wine and wickets.  We will start around 6 and we have volunteer crews setting everything up and doing the grilling.  The menu is Hamburgers, Brats, Mac and Cheese, Cole Slaw, Chips, Drinks and all the condiments for good fixins.  The club is keeping the bar open for alcohol but I am sure we can tuck some drinks in our coolers on the porch.  Soft drinks and water will already be there for us.  Please make a reservation at the club so we can be sure we have enough food. Mary Lou did a great job with last year's event and I am positive this one will be no exception.  See ya there all you CROQUENUTS!

                                                     Reg Heinitsh Jr

Hello and kudos to all of you for attending the final installment of our Feast with Friends series. Thank you to Reg Heinitsh Jr. for his words of support for croquet and its impact here at Lake Toxaway. We couldn't have come this far without all of the fine collective efforts led by George and Jane Enochs. We had a great turnout once again with a fine speaker, Dr David Joyce. Following his presentation, we were serenaded in song by Regina Davis with her beautiful voice. It is inspiring to know that we have such talent being educated in our area of North Carolina.

Wine and Wickets September 12 and Feast with Friends following

This is a reminder to come play Monday, September 12! After being rained out on the 5th, we can put our game faces back on to play in this beautiful weather we are having now.
Please reserve your spot for the Feast with Friends too. We are looking forward to the program entitled, "So, You Want to Major in Philosophy? Are You Crazy?" , which will be given by the incoming President of Brevard College, Dr. David Joyce. We have another guest, Regina Davis, who attended Brevard College. She will lend us her beautiful voice in song.
Bring your friends and family to this final Feast with Friends. We are very fortunate to have these events available to us.

Second All Mountain Golf Croquet Tournament

Just in case any of you missed this email from Don Molitor, here it is again preserved in the blog. I think it sums up the All Mountain Golf Croquet Tournament event beautifully. Thank you Don for all of your work in making the Interclub Challenges such a success; we appreciate your work!

September 8, 2011

CroquetNuts All;

Congratulations!!! You all are winners.

Today we participated in the Second All Mountain Golf Croquet Tournament, held this year at the beautiful grounds and lawns of Chattooga CC. The participating clubs included Highlands, Burlingame, Chattooga and Lake Toxaway PLUS for the first time Cedar Creek and Trillium for a total of six clubs. Next year we may have an additional two clubs.

This out-bursting of interest [and enjoyment] in the sport of croquet has been led by the Lake Toxaway CC and its Lake Toxaway Mallet Club. All the clubs have discovered what our Club and its management have found that the addition of Croquet is both a fun pastime and additional amenity but also a good financial investment to retain membership and to recruit new members. A hardy thanks to the Lake Toxaway CC for providing our excellent lawns and for the commitment to the new lawns as well.

The Golf Croquet Tournament was not only well run, but also well played. Your “team” consisted of Les and Nancy Avera, George and Susan Bagwell, Raquel Ferrero, Bunny Jones, Jeanette Wilkes and Don Molitor. The scoring was for the total number of wickets by each player and a team total without regard to matches won or lost. The games were for 25 minutes OR to four [4] wickets whichever came first. The results found Lake Toxaway in first place with 72 wickets and Highlands second with 66 wickets.

We owe a debt of gratitude to George and Jane Enochs for spear-heading the efforts to bring croquet to Lake Toxaway. Each of us CroquetNuts has enjoyed the sport and we look forward to next year when we will defend our title.

As this year winds down and we look forward to 2012 we can expect to have as many as eight clubs in the All Mountain group. Our interclub events this year was limited to four matches. It is my strong recommendation that we make every attempt to have one interclub match with each of the other seven clubs. This will take some dedication not only by our interclub planners but also each of our members to be a participant in at least one of the matches. Every club will field beginners as well as more experienced players for every match. Plan now to be part of the fun and to play an interclub match.

See you next year:

Don Molitor

Monday Feast with Friends, August 8

If you did not make it to the dinner on August 8 you missed a real treat. We had a wonderful evening with Bernie Marcus speaking. It was a great opportunity to hear a few inside stories on the building of such a grand structure. Thanks to Bernie and Billie for coming and thanks to all of you for attending and inviting your friends. Pictured here, from right, Kent Garner, Bernie Marcus, Dave Wilkes, Billie Marcus.
It is important to add that each month, Kent Garner helps to clean the aquarium, donning his scuba gear and all. I am content to stay on the other side of the glass!

A quick summation of W&W's past

Hello after a long absence of posting! Yes, we had our championship awards dinner last night, but before I post about that, here are a few tidbits about Wine and Wickets past. This is a quick rundown of events.

August 8th seems so far away now, but I have to congratulate Pfil Hunt and Alan McDonald on a great day of play. They were the last ones standing in the shootout. I don't have it written down who won, so maybe someone can enlighten me.
I want to thank Jean Irwin for some outstanding food on the 8th as well!

I was in Florida on the 15th and I want to thank Susan Bagwell and Paul Cooper for filling in for me. I was thinking of you all, toasting you with a glass of wine in my hand! Thanks also to Kathy Balistreri and Jean Barger for snack delivery.

I returned to be at August 22 W&W and congrats to Susan Bagwell for winning one of the shootouts. I hear Paul was given the prize by mistake....
Renee Alexander knows how to set out a great spread of food! Thanks Renee.

Monday Feast with Friends, August 8

This is a reminder about our upcoming Monday night Feast with Friends. We are happy to welcome Bernie and Billi Marcus, speaking about the Georgia Aquarium. If you haven't been there yet, please take a moment to check out their site www.georgiaaquarium.org and "dive in". As a native Atlantan myself, I am thrilled that my city has been blessed with such a fabulous jewel. I would highly recommend a visit as there are exhibits to entice any age group.
Please invite your friends and don't forget to make a reservation. I am looking forward to an entertaining evening, after another fun round of croquet with friends.

Wine and Wickets 7-25 rained out!

We gave it our best, but it wasn't to be with the storms that hit us last night. Too bad our scores didn't count; Dave Wilkes and I had a great game of 4 wickets to 1. I can assure all that I really tried not to win the raffle last night! I was placing my bets on Wes Dickman to win it this time.
I do need to know who needs to be reimbursed for their food contributions. Anyone who hears, please let me know. Thanks to Judy Lipham and Kathy Johnson for bringing the snacks this week!

Interclub match 7-25 with Trillium CC

After hearing from that darned "Highjacker" again, this will be another dry email, but I'll do my best. If anyone knows the whereabouts of said Croquetnuts pirate, please let me know!!

Richard Raymond

The Brothers Hamilton

We lost our match with Trillium by 4 wickets, sad to say. We had a good time though, and have met some great players from our opposing teams. Thanks to all who have participated.

It may be too late

Hello Again from the blogging hijacker.  I have hijacked your site because since my last post nobody is listening!  These "nuts" are out of control.  They are actively and quite successfully recruiting from within our community.  They are now holding monthly dinners with supposedly educational guest speakers.  I have figured out that during these presentations subliminal messages promoting their cause are being delivered.  At this last dinner alone there were 150 attendees.  It will not be long before it will be too late to stop them.  I have tried to warn residents of our community and the staff at the country club but no one will take me seriously.  I understand that just recently an order was placed for 20 new mallets.  These new lifeforms are so bold that they have taken to organizing a club championship to determine who is the greatest warrior in their group.  I beg you to please not allow yourself to be duped into thinking that these games are for fun. Our community is not the only one being over run by these creatures.  The croquetnuts are now organizing meetings with other groups under the guise of interclub matches.  These have proven to be very successful recruiting grounds as newer "mallet clubs" from other developments are starting to pop up.  I am fearful that there is no end in site.

As their evolution continues, you can tell they are getting smarter.  If you notice, the female tomahawk chopper has quit chopping.  Obviously, she read my post and has gotten wiser.  Now many of their kind are learning how to crush the striking balls and make them fly through the air and still pass through the tiny wickets.  How long will it be before we have reports of members coming up missing and the only clues will be round holes in their glass windows where break ins have occurred. Picture the effect of this geometric growth.  After the fall season is over, many of the converted will return to their winter homes to unsuspecting communities to begin new recruitment efforts.  Their is even a national headquarters now in West Palm Beach operating under the name of U. S Croquet Association.  People please, I have obtained documentation that proves that USCA really stands for Uniting Soldiers for the Conquering Aliens.  It was just recently that I observed one of their founding fathers (whom I refer to as the Great Exciter) preaching to a group of unsuspecting residents about the joy you can receive by learning how to execute well with the mallet and striking balls. He is a very smart man because whenever he thinks he might be losing people's attention he has his wife calmly step in and take over.  No one seems immune to her charm.  Maybe she is the real leader.

I have also recently learned that these creatures have successfully begun to communicate with underwater life and have enlisted them to help in recruitment above and below the oceans.  Don't be surprised if someone comes to speak to us representing life in the oceans.  Do you know how many people visit aquariums each year?

Just look at the following facts"

1. Their group now numbers in excess of 150
2. Their new practice battlefield will be ready in just a few short months.  When has the LTCC ever reacted that quickly to a members request.  I am afraid the LTCC staff is already lost.
3. They are obviously preparing for combat in all types of conditions because rain does not make them stop.
4. They have now recruited a local artist from within our own to start a propaganda campaign.  She has begun draping tables with their flags that bear the striking ball symbols and can be observed recording their success with her camera. I have tried to warn her husband but he ignores my pleas and simply says "she is cute".
5. They have learned that humans by nature are attracted to making money with little or no effort. So now they are holding weekly fund raising  sessions they call 50/50 raffles.  Who can resist this temptation.
6. I assure you that it is only a matter of time before the LTCC steps in and tears down our beloved tennis pro shop and begin to build a new inner sanctum for them to hold their secret strategy meetings.

I will no longer invade your site to express my concerns over this alien movement. I have said enough. Those of you that wish to give in to their charm, I can only say "I warned you".  You will realize the evils of their ways when the LTCC golfers finally are won over.  It is my understanding that this has become a primary goal of the Great Exciter.  I am now taking my fight underground. Those of you who have been able to resist, stay calm.  I will contact you to start a resistance movement to fight this growing malignancy that has invaded our community.  Until then beware of splits, rolls and stop shots.  They will soon be aimed at us.

July 19, Interclub Match with Highlands Country Club, Croquetnuts Rule!

We had a great match with our winning score of 37 over Highlands with their score being 18.  Linda Garner wrote to Don Molitor:  Everything went as planned today.  I have attached the scores for your records.  Highlands elected to not double bank.  Lake Toxaway was "on" today as evidenced by the attached scores.  The best match of today definitely goes to Nancy Avera and George Bagwell who defeated their opponent 4-1 in 11.5 mintues!!  Not much else to say after that.
Thanks to all of you who played!

Tuesday, July 18 Wine and Wickets

Hello there,
I am putting my feelers out to those who can tell me who won the shootout on the 18th. I am not finding the results in my notes, so this is a test for a response to this blog message!
Thanks to Nina Mackie and Marilyn Gasperoni for providing the snacks. I think we can safely say that their efforts were appreciated by the empty plates at the end of play. Love that vidalia onion dip and the zucchini squares, Marilyn.
Our turnout continues to be large in July; if I am remembering correctly, we had close to 70 showing up to play. Thanks to all who are so enthusiastic about the game.

Monday, July 11, a busy day

Cheers to all who played in the second Interclub match with Chattooga. The final score was Chattooga - 31, Lake Toxaway - 27. We support your efforts and there are still two matches remaining! Anyone who is interested can call Don Molitor to see if there are openings available.

Thanks to all who came out to play at Wine and Wickets on the 11th. We had a fabulous turnout and although we didn't have our "shootout" at the end, many newcomers got to come and get on the green and play. We are looking forward to grass sprouting on the new court. It needs to hurry up and grow for all of the new players we have.

Also, thanks to our "snackettes" of the week, Lee Davenport and Bess DeLaPerriere. We applaud all of you who have brought something to the table. We do have 2 openings for August 1 and one opening for August 8. Please let me know if you need to be reimbursed for your food purchases.

Our Feast With Friends was another well attended event with 126 of us showing our support to hear Dr. Bob Hayward from PARI. We may not have the knowledge he and others there have, but that makes it all the more important to visit the facility.  Another reminder: you can visit the site at www.pari.edu just to see what they offer. I took a tour of the facility with Dr Joe Philips as our guide; he was an excellent host.

Croquet Charities Event, July 23

I know most of you have heard about the Charities Event on the 23rd, but have you committed to play yet? We have 33 signed up so far and we want more of you! Last year we had a total of 44 playing. So surely, we can top that. You can pick up a form from the Tennis pro shop, at Wine & Wickets, or from Linda Garner and Nancy Avera.

Something to remember about this event!!
This is for fun. Some would call fun a competitive game and others call it play. Whatever you call it, come out and lets make it an enjoyable day for a good cause. There is no skill limitation when it comes to playing for charity. We are out to have a great day and evening for the community at large, so I vote fun as the operative word here. Please sign up and we will enjoy a great day together!

Monday, June 20
I hear that we had a first timer, Sally Morgans, who came out and became a Croquet Star, winning that evening. Wahoo and please come back again to play! Repeat performances are allowed.

Monday, June 27
Hello to all grandkids for coming out and playing the game. We love your participation! You are our future players. Thanks to our snackettes, Cary Lide and Sue Hester for contributing. Karen Phillips was the lucky raffle winner this week.
I hear that Bob Hamilton won the shootout, hitting the stake. Paint some flames on that mallet, Bob. You are hot.

Paul and I are looking forward to getting back on the courts for some play. Thanks to all of you for filling in while we have been out of town. Have a safe and enjoyable July 4th!

PS and don't forget to check it out!

PARI stands for Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute as many of you know already. I am hoping that we will see some kids at the next Feast with Friends on Monday, July 11. Maybe we can entice them with the food and some fun information to pique their interest in astronomy. Wouldn't hurt to take that field trip to the facility either. They can actually check out the website and do some exploring themselves. If they are to spend time up here in the future, lets plan on educating them as to what great things we have to offer here in the area of  Lake Toxaway!
Just in case, here is the link again:  www.pari.edu
Thanks!
Cathy

Thank you Linda and Susan!!

Like last week, I will not be here for W&W, but Linda Garner and Susan Bagwell will be here to greet you. They are good with the name tags I hear. Linda tells me that we made 60.00 from last week's raffle. Thanks to all who came out to play, and to our "Snackettes".
I am hoping for a great turnout for the next Feast with Friends on July 11. We did so well with the last one, and this one will prove to be just as interesting. Our friends from PARI will be educating us about the facility. We are thrilled to have something so significant close by to visit. They have a great kids program, so for all of your visiting relatives, I would recommend a trip there. You can ask Dr. Joe Phillips about it as well; he gives a great tour! For more info go to www.pari.edu and check it out.

Croquet Mallets

This is a reminder to let everyone know that if you would like a mallet from woodmallets.com we can get them at a 20% discount from Highlands Country Club.  We just have to order at least 8 mallets or more in order to get the discount.  I currently have orders for 6.  You can click on the link above to get to their site to view your choices. Once I get 2 more I will call them and place the order and it should take 2 - 3 weeks tops.  Highlands will also let us charge the mallets to our individual LTCC accounts.  So here is what I need, 1) Type of Mallet you want, 2) Length of handle, 3) Weighting in the Head of Mallet, 4) Initials or what you want embossed on the head, 5) Your club number.  I will assume everyone wants a brown leather handle wrap and a 10 inch mallet head unless you specify otherwise.  Please call or email me with any questions or any orders.

Photos from June 13

Hello to all,

I took some photos at Wine and Wickets and at our Feast with Friends. Take a look. I will be formatting a new slide show for you to look at.
Linda Garner will be your host at the next Wine and Wickets on June 20. Be sure to sign up to bring a snack. Hang onto your receipts and we can reimburse you. We need help in August. Thanks for the great goodies so far.
The first Feast with Friends was a great meal with a great speaker. Thank you to all who attended.
In reference to the Croquetnut Blog highjacking, I say keep it up!! Don't know who you are, but you are getting a great response!!

Beware of the "Nut"

I am obligated to begin this post with an apology.  I have invaded your treasured space because I have made an amazing discovery of a new species that has been uncovered in our own beautiful backyard. So I am sorry for hacking into your world but I thought it was important for me to share this find with all of you. This new species of creature was first seen in the Lake Toxaway community only two years ago and local scientists believe the facts bear out that we are viewing first hand how fascinating the evolutionary process can be. Since our first encounter two years ago, the population of this new life form has managed to double itself over seven times. At first we, of the investigative community, were ecstatic to learn of the birth and growth of a new species. It is not everyday that one gets to experience this first hand. After about six months of watching from a distance and documenting the process, we began to get a bit concerned about the pace of growth and how rapidly this development process was unfolding. Not only was the new population growing geometrically but the group actually started organizing itself into a collective community. This was fascinating to my colleagues initially but soon our amazement began to turn to worry. Immediately upon organizing, the group decided that protecting themselves was imperative so they decided to bear arms. Curiously they chose an ancient style weapon to protect themselves, if protection is really their goal. The weapon was fashioned after a medieval style hammer and the group began calling it a mallet. The intelligence of this group is mind boggling because instead of becoming proficient with the basics uses of this hammer like device the group began fine tuning their skills by striking multi colored balls expertly around an open field. They then placed brackets in the ground and to further hone their talents they began attempting to knock these balls through these brackets that barely had enough room for passage. As the group population began to grow so has their expertise and skills. I personally, along with my colleagues, do not yet know to what end they have in mind.  As the species has a human like form I am fearful that we may be facing a situation similar to the movie “The Invasion of the Body Snatchers”. Not only has the growth been phenomenal, but they have developed traditional verbal language skills, a type of sign language that we have not yet deciphered and they are becoming very territorial. An example of this signing was first seen when one of the group began arousing enthusiasm by using a tomahawk chopping motion to excite the group. I am fearful that this chopping motion is actually a carefully disguised call to follow her into battle. No violence has occurred yet because every time their actions become too excited their apparent leader (now labeled #1, the Great Exciter) calmly steps forward and gains all of their attention by pursing his lips and creating an ear piercing whistle. He quickly calms the active crowd and skillfully begins to encourage them to be fruitful and go forth and multiply. And multiply they have. I have taken up way too much of your valuable time and space but let me list a few facts that should be cause for alarm:

  1. The group quickly adopted a formal way of dress in All Whites. Is this a just a clever form of daytime camouflage?
  2. They eventually began to call themselves “nuts”, “croquetnuts” to be exact. This alone makes me worry about their ultimate intentions.
  3. They claimed a piece of land in our valued community and their fast paced growth has required that they double their needs and have begun occupying new space complete with plans for new hammers, new striking balls and new brackets for accuracy.  I fear that before we know what is happening they will begin to try and assimilate into our local community.

I will continue to periodically report their progress to you but PLEASE be careful.  Approach these “Croquetnuts” with caution. Their communications skills are quite powerful and they now openly try to recruit for their own cause from our hallowed population. We have already seen some of our membership convert to what very well may be the dark side (I think all whites are just a clever cover to hide their true nature). If you pay close attention, the nut who began using the chopping motion has recruited from within our own one who has the makings of a military leader. You know the real “crusty” type. Thank you for letting me hijack your space.  I feel it is my duty to keep you informed and up to date.

Keep Toxaway safe and beware of those bearing custom mallets,

Anonymous

Wood Mallets

What a great event we had last night.  The turnout was excellent (120 people), the food was good, the price was right and everyone seemed to enjoy our first Feast with Friends speaker.  Many thanks to everyone that helped make the evening a success.  Remember that July 11th is our next open community dinner and our speaker will be Bob Haywood from the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI).  PARI is in our own backyard and only a handful of similar facilities exist around the world.  Bob comes to us with an extensive background and will be another enjoyable speaker.  Their will also be a brief presentation about an up and coming community program being held at PARI this fall.  So go ahead and start recruiting your friends to join us.

Also, Paul has been doing some mallet research and he has found a local source for the Wood Mallets brand.  You can go to woodmallets.com to view  your choices of types of mallets.  The Highlands Country Club is now sourcing the mallets from New Zealand.  If we order less than eight mallets the price is only slightly less than if you were to order them yourself online.  But if we can order 8 or more we would get a 20% discount, which is significant.  If you have any questions concerning the types of mallets, pricing or would like to place an order just contact Paul.  He already has orders for four mallets and is trying to place the first order by the end of next week.

First Interclub Match 6-7-2011

Today we had our first Interclub match with Burlingame. We came out the winners after a good day of play. The final score was LTMC - 77 and Burlingame - 67. Thanks to the LTCC staff for providing a fine spread for us and our guests.

Moving right along

Hello Croquetnuts,
We are having a great turnout for W&W as evidenced on June 6. Don't know why I didn't bring my camera to capture moments this past Monday. The rain tried to make an appearance, but not for long. Ted Mullet walked away with first place scoring honors; Bob Hamilton came in second after a closely contested shootout.
I watch all of these great players we have, wondering if I need more instruction. Remember that Kenny Lovett is available for lessons for a nominal fee. I may need to sign myself up and learn from one of the best!
It is great to see continued attendance of friends and family members. Thanks to all who come out.

Wine and Wickets, June 3

Another great time was had at W&W with top shooting  honors going to Les Avera, and Pam Weekes. Thanks to all new/visiting players for coming out and enjoying the games.

We are happy to see people continuing to have a good time as evidenced by some snapshots taken!
Remember to make your reservations for the first Monday Feast with Friends on June 13.  Thanks to Davey Wilkes and Susie Dickman, we have a great speaker in Dan Miller. He was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1992, representing the thirteenth district in Florida until 2003. His role as scholar and educator includes teaching at over 20 institutions in the US and abroad at Oxford University, England. We look forward to welcoming him here, so remember to invite you friends for an interesting evening.

Another fun Monday at Wine and Wickets

Hello Croquetnutters,
We had another great time at W&W Monday. It will take a bit of time to get used to the online reservations system, but with Paul's helpful directions, we can all master it! The telephone does still provide comfort, so I will continue to check with Doris and Kenny to get any phone in reservations from them.
Now to other important stuff. Kudos to those who won the "shootout" this week: Charlie Simon and Jeannette Wilkes took the top honors. We need to acknowledge Mary Ellen Williams' fine play as well.
For myself, staying and playing after 6:00 was a real treat. I played with some of the masters of the game and learned some things just by watching and asking questions. It was a great way to take in some more instruction.
Thanks to all of the staff at the Toxaway Room. Dinner was a great affair and we hope to continue the menu choices for the coming weeks in the same fashion.
The only thing missing for me was my camera to take some photos. That will be on my list for next week.
I have put out a sign up sheet for "Snack Patrol" , so any of you who wish to bring something yummy, look for the list on the table and help us out! One aside; I brought chocolate covered peanuts and quickly found out they don't fare well in the heat.
We welcome comments here on the blog, so don't be afraid......
Thanks for visiting!

First Wine and Wickets

The turnout was great for our first Wine and Wickets! Welcome to all new croquet players. Once you start playing you will get hooked.
The new online scheduling system is great for planning ahead, so we can make sure that all of us get a chance to play. Remember to also make your reservations for the meal following. We are planning on stopping play on the courts at 6:00. One more game will then be scheduled for those who want to continue play; the rest of us can head to the Toxaway Room for dinner. This will prevent the club from being slammed with one large group.
We will have a set menu this coming Monday with some healthy alternative selections. I have been working with the club to insure that we can all enjoy our meals together after playing.
Congratulations to Les Avera and Paul Cooper for scoring the most wickets. We also want to thank Linda Garner and Russ Wagner for the snacks on our first W&W. A sign up sheet will be out for snack assignments. Please pick a Monday to do snacks. We have a $25 reimbursable limit. This will keep it simple.
